The coroner’s inquest into the death of 27-year-old Omar Badjie entered a technical phase as a police forensic expert provided testimony regarding postmortem examination on Omar’s body.

Detective Corporal Babou Mbye, the tenth witness, appeared before Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court. Babou Mbye, a member of the Crime Record Office and Scientific Support Unit, provided the court with photographic evidence taken during the postmortem examination of Omar Badjie.

Detective Corporal Mbye, whose duties include crime scene investigation and forensic photography, testified that he was assigned by his superior, Superintendent Francis Jatta, to attend the postmortem on 30th September, 2025.

He testified that the postmortem examination took place at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul, four days after the alleged encounter that claimed Omar Badjie’s life. Babou Mbye told the court he was accompanied by ASP Malang Badjie and Corporal Edrisa Jarju.

“I took pictures of the late Omar Badjie before the postmortem was conducted and also took pictures during the postmortem,” Mbye stated. “Whenever the doctor asked me to take a picture, I did.”

The witness presented eleven photographs to the court, documenting various parts of Omar Badjie’s body as directed by the medical examiners, Dr Daffeh and Dr Leigh. The images were admitted into evidence and marked as exhibits.

Principal Magistrate Mendy adjourned the matter to Monday, 19th January, 2026, for the continuation of proceedings.

The death of Omar Badjie continues to be a matter of national interest, fueling calls for transparency and police reform.
