Pa Modou Bojang, a journalist, has been awarded D15,000,000 in damages and D200,000 in legal expenses by the High Court in Banjul as a result of his legal dispute with the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Interior, and the Attorney General.
According to the High Court in Banjul, journalist Pa Modou Bojang has been awarded D15,000,000 in damages and D200,000 in legal expenses as a result of his legal dispute with the Attorney General, the Minister of Interior, and the Inspector General of Police.
The underlying cause of the case was the maltreatment he endured at the hands of Police Intervention Unit (PIU) officers during the Faraba incident in June 2018.
Bojang initiated litigation in 2018 to obtain compensation for assault, battery, physical injuries, mental trauma, unlawful detention, pain, suffering, and public humiliation. He also claimed legal and administrative expenses that were incurred during the case.
Honourable Justice Sonia Akinbiyi, KJW, rendered the judgement today in favour of Bojang, awarding him D15,000,000 in compensation for the violations and D200,000 to cover legal expenses. The ruling emphasised the egregious nature of the maltreatment he endured at the Brikama Police Station by PIU personnel and officers during the Faraba incident. His legal counsel, Lamin J. Darbo, represented Bojang.
