The inquest into the death of Omar Badjie, who died following an encounter with police on September 26, 2025, continued with the conclusion of the fourth witness’s testimony and the commencement of the fifth.
Nurse Muhammed Jaiteh, the Officer in Charge of Mandinaring Health Center, concluded his evidence before presiding Magistrate Anna.
When asked by Magistrate Anna if he had anything further to tell the court, Jaiteh stated, “in the evidence where I stop is what I know.” He then confirmed he had an item to tender, submitting his college certificate as evidence before being discharged as a witness.
Fifth Witness Testifies on Procedures and Arrival of Omar Badjie at Mandinaring health centre before transferred to Kanifing
The fifth witness, Sunkaru Demba, a nurse attendant from Lamin, currently posted at Mandinaring Health Centre provided her account.
Sunkaru Demba testified on the procedures performed on the late Omar Badjie, confirming she received the patient in an unconscious state. She explained her role involves attending to training nurses, assisting them in receiving patients, and checking vital signs like temperature and blood pressure.
When questioned by Magistrate Anna O. Mendy on her qualifications, Sunkaru Demba confirmed completing Grade 12 in 2004 and applying for the nurse attendant position in 2009. She was selected and confirmed she underwent a three-week training program under the Ministry of Health after her selection.
She further testified that she studied Arts in Senior Secondary school, also tendered her appointment letter as an exhibit.
Recounting her service history, Sunkaru Demba stated she was posted at Faji-Kunda from 2009 to 2021, transferred to Makumbaya until April 16, 2025, and then moved to Mandinaring, where she is currently working.
On what happened on the date in question, Sunkaru Demba explained that on September 26, 2025, she was on duty and received the unconscious patient around 10:00 AM, along with a trained nurse, Fatou Sanyang.
Magistrate Anna asked who brought the patient. Nurse Demba testified it was four police officers, whose names she did not know.
“In the time you received the patient, what did you do?,” Magistrate Anna O. Mendy asked.
“I help them to place him at the bed, and I rush to call my boss Muhammed Jaiteh, he is our officer in charge.” Nurse Demba testified.
Nurse Demba further testified that after her boss Muhammad Jaiteh arrived and asked the officers what happened, they (Police officer) responded that they were patrolling and encountered the patient with cannabis and they chased him, *he fell down* and that is when they brought him to the health centre.
Nurse Demba told the court that her boss Nurse Jaiteh advised her to put the patient on oxygen. After administering the oxygen, she left the room and later escorted the patient to Kanifing General Hospital alongside two family members and one police officer.
The case was adjourned to Monday, November 10, 2025, at 1:30 PM, for the continuation of the fifth witness’s testimony.
