The Special Select Committee of the National Assembly has formally summoned Alhaji Mamadi Kurang, the former secretary to the Janneh Commission, to provide testimony in its current investigation regarding the contentious sale and disposal of assets associated with former President Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh.
A summons, dated 3 July 2025 and reviewed by Kerr Fatou, instructs Kurang to appear before the committee on 16 July 2025 at 11:00 AM at the National Assembly Building in Banjul. The investigation comes in light of findings from the Commission of Inquiry into the Financial Activities of Public Bodies, Enterprises, and Offices, which highlighted significant irregularities in the management of assets obtained during Jammeh’s presidency.
“You are hereby summoned to provide testimony regarding all that you know pertaining to the subject matter of the inquiry,” the document stated.
Kurang, who played a significant administrative role during the Janneh Commission, is thought to possess crucial information regarding the sale and management of assets linked to Jammeh and his close associates during his time with the commission. The summons clearly indicates that failing to appear or withholding pertinent information may result in contempt of the National Assembly, a serious violation under Gambian law.
The Special Select Committee was formed on 14 May 2025 to examine the controversial sale of assets obtained by former President Yahya Jammeh during his tenure from 1994 to 2017.
Although Kurang has not yet provided a public response to the recent summons, he has previously indicated his willingness to cooperate with any official investigation concerning the Jammeh assets.
