GAMBIA: Muslim Ummah Observes Blessed Day of Yowmul Ashura (Tamharit) with Fasting and Remembrance of Allah

Today Muslims across the world are observing the sacred day of Yawmul Ashura which is observed by fasting, prayer, reflection and the remembrance of Allah. Ashura is observed on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar and is of great spiritual significance to the global Muslim community.

Muslims around the world are spending the day in worship, praying for Allah’s mercy, forgiveness and blessings, while many are fasting on the day of Ashura, following the Sunnah fast of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who recommended fasting on the day as a way of thanking Allah.

Mosques and Islamic centres have held special gatherings, lectures and Qur’an recitations to mark the occasion and remind worshippers of the importance of faith, patience and devotion. Families are using the day to strengthen their bond with Allah through prayer and acts of charity.
