Following a fatal maritime incident off the coast of Jinack Village, President Adama Barrow addressed to the nation on Friday, calling the tragedy a sobering reminder of the potentially fatal consequences of irregular migration.

On January 2, 2026, the president delivered an official national address in which he conveyed his profound sadness over the number of people who died and others who are unaccounted for following the boat disaster. He reassured the bereaved families of the country’s solidarity and offered his sympathies.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of The Gambia, I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Mr. Barrow said. Acknowledging the anguish of relatives awaiting news, he added that the country stood with them “at this painful moment.”

According to the president, the government has triggered its emergency response plan, allocating resources to aid survivors and continue search and rescue efforts. “Government has deployed adequate resources to intensify efforts and provide immediate assistance to the survivors,” he said.

Mr. Barrow praised the swift response of the Gambian Navy and commended health workers for their efforts to treat the injured. He lauded naval personnel for what he described as a “courageous and determined response” and thanked doctors, nurses, paramedics, and staff at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital for working tirelessly to save lives and comfort victims.

The president urged people to be calm while rescue efforts proceeded and stated that officials would give updates once the victims’ names were verified. He urged people to continue being understanding and helpful as security and aid organizations performed their duties.

Along with announcing that the government will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, the president promised that anyone found guilty would face legal repercussions.

He ended by reiterating the government’s commitment to preserving lives and tackling the threats that still motivate irregular migration, and he offered prayers for the victims, the injured, and the impacted families.
