The inquest into the death of Omar Badjie took an important step today 19th, January 19, 2026, as the court moved from the Brikama Magistrates’ Court to the actual scene of the incident in Mandinaring for a “locus visit.”

Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy led the court to the community mortuary where the late Omar Badjie worked and where the alleged fatal encounter took place.

During the proceedings, the late Omar Badjie’s (deceased) personal items were tendered as evidence. These included a red short pair of trousers, a round-neck T-shirt, black boxers, and cash amounting to D210 (one D100 note, two D50 notes, and one D10 note).

It was also confirmed during the visit that the suspect officer, Sulayman Jarju, and his colleagues are currently in custody. In Jarju’s own testimony, he admitted suspecting Badjie was in possession of cannabis at the time of the encounter.

The seventh witness, Musa, was recalled to the stand and asked to guide the court to the exact spot of the assault. Standing under the mango tree, Musa pointed out the branch that an officer allegedly cut to beat the deceased.

Musa recounted that before the beating began, the officer slapped Omar and ordered him to move. When Omar replied, “No, I cannot go,” the officer reportedly cut a thick and wet (fresh) branch from the tree.

“The branch was a bit big and it was a wet one,” Musa testified, adding that the force of the beating was so severe that the branch broke into pieces during the assault”

The court also heard from Chief Inspector Omar Bojang of the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) unit based at Brikama Police Station. Bojang testified that he was assigned to investigate the scene of the alleged murder on 30th September, 2025.

Accompanied by Sub-Inspector Yaya Bojang and Sergeant Fatou Simah, the team took photographs and measurements of the area, he confirmed it was 353 meters from Omar Badjie’s workplace at the mortuary to the spot where he collapsed.

When asked for the photographs, Chief Inspector Bojang admitted he left them at the office, though he noted that a full report with the printed photos is prepared.

Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy adjourned the matter to Tuesday, 20th January, 2026, for the continuation of the inquest.
