The guests were not just passive listeners to the speeches; they were immersed in the rhythm and spirit of the musical displays, engaging in a collective experience that echoed well beyond the confines of the theatre.
The Ebujan Theatre was at full capacity as a captivating cultural performance, primarily featuring female artists adorned in vibrant red and white outfits, took the spotlight and enchanted the audience with elegance and vitality.
The guests were clearly touched, beaming and clapping all the while. In addition to the outstanding performance, many attendees conveyed that these cultural exchanges ought to be a consistent occurrence between the two amicable nations—honoring not just diplomacy but the profound human bond that unites The Gambia and the Republic of Korea.
For many, it was a moment that will remain in memory for years to come, a celebration not only of diplomatic ties but also of authentic human connection.
During the event, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Hon. Serign Modou Njie, stated:
“This 60th anniversary serves as both a celebration of our history and a reaffirmation of the shared values that have shaped our cooperation through the years: respect for sovereignty, a commitment to peace, sustainable development, and a belief in the strength of partnership.”
He continued, “Throughout the last sixty years, our two nations have developed and strengthened a robust bilateral relationship founded on mutual respect, trust, hope, and shared benefit. We stand together in our shared values of justice, peace, and accountability for everyone, regardless of color, faith, or nationality.
Minister Njie conveyed heartfelt gratitude for Korea’s steadfast support, stating, “The Government of The Gambia holds in high regard the assistance extended by the Republic of Korea during this time of collaboration.” The contributions from your country have made a noticeable and beneficial difference in the lives and livelihoods of Gambians, enhancing living conditions and playing a crucial role in our socio-economic development.
He emphasized Korea’s alignment with The Gambia’s national priorities, especially the goals of the National Development Plan, which seeks to promote inclusive growth and act as a catalyst for sustainable development.
“We highly appreciate your contributions in vital areas such as agriculture, particularly in rice production, education, capacity building, and the significant Transitional Justice process, through your support to the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.” This contribution has significantly impacted our national endeavors regarding truth, reconciliation, and the strengthening of democracy.
Hyuk-Woon Kwon, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Senegal, also spoke at the gathering, highlighting the strength of the bilateral relationship:
“Throughout the past sixty years, Korea and The Gambia have developed a strong bond based on mutual respect, peace, and democracy. Korea has consistently backed The Gambia’s initiatives in peacebuilding and transitional justice. We look forward to maintaining this collaboration as The Gambia strives for enduring peace and sustainable development.
He emphasized Korea’s commitment to human capital, stating, “Korea is proud to support The Gambia’s dedicated efforts to invest in its people.” For instance, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), in collaboration with UNESCO, initiated a vocational training programme that has broadened educational and employment prospects for young Gambians.
Ambassador Kwon also addressed food security initiatives: “Last August, the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Rice Seed Cultivation Complex Project.” We believe that this project, in conjunction with the continuous efforts of the Korea Partnership for Innovation in Agriculture (KOPIA), will effectively bring the K-Ricebelt Initiative to fruition. We anticipate that it will significantly enhance food security in The Gambia.
He remarked, “I am pleased that representatives from KOICA, KRC, and KOPIA are also here with us tonight.” Today’s performance presents a significant chance to enhance the connections between our two nations. Korea and The Gambia, despite their geographical distance, exhibit numerous similarities. Both nations have historically regarded music and dance as essential elements of our communities and traditions. These cultural exchanges will strengthen our friendship and expand the possibilities for future collaboration.
Muhammed Jah, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in The Gambia, shared a sincere reflection on the relationship:
“It is a significant honor to observe the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between our countries, a relationship founded on collaboration across multiple sectors. Sixty years marks a remarkable achievement in diplomacy; it embodies trust, mutual respect, and, I would argue, a sense of family.
Mr. Jah conveyed his appreciation for Korea’s choice to host the celebration in The Gambia, stating, “Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1965, Korea has stood shoulder to shoulder with The Gambia, supporting our nation in peacebuilding, development, and beyond.” The Gambia has welcomed the Republic of Korea as a genuine friend and partner in return.
Reflecting on his role, he noted, “As Honorary Consul, I have the privilege of witnessing this relationship flourish, not just in official documents, but in tangible real-life impact.” The partnership consistently impacts lives in significant ways, from farmers embracing innovative techniques to students seizing opportunities in Korea.
