The Ministry of Defence released a statement indicating that the incident took place around midnight on December 31, 2025, involving a vessel that was reportedly carrying over 200 migrants on an irregular journey toward Europe.

The Gambia Navy initiated an emergency response promptly upon receiving a distress alert. The GNS Jambar, a naval patrol vessel engaged in a routine fisheries protection mission, was promptly recalled and redirected to the location of the incident. Further search, rescue, and recovery operations were initiated in collaboration with various security and emergency agencies. A naval rescue vessel was dispatched from the Fisheries Jetty in Banjul at approximately 1:00 a.m. on January 1.

The ministry reported that the distressed boat was subsequently located grounded on a sandbank. The rescue operation included three naval speedboats and a coastal patrol vessel, along with help from a local fishing canoe whose operators willingly offered their support.

At the time of the statement, 96 individuals had been rescued. Among these, 39 were admitted to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, whereas 57 were receiving medical care at the naval base. Ten of the survivors were reported to be in critical condition and receiving urgent treatment.

Authorities have confirmed the recovery of seven bodies, while several passengers are still unaccounted for. It is believed that some of the victims may not be Gambians, and officials have stated that efforts are currently being made to confirm their nationalities.

The government has initiated the National Emergency Response Plan, enhancing search and recovery efforts through the mobilization of all essential national resources.

The government, in its statement, conveyed profound concern regarding the incident, reiterated its dedication to preventing irregular migration, and offered condolences to the families of the deceased.

Officials indicated that additional updates will be shared as more information is obtained.
