Former President Yahya Jammeh will formally inform the Office of the President and the Speaker of the National Assembly of his intended return to The Gambia later this month, according to a letter dated November 3, 2025, which was published on the APRC official Facebook.
The letter further specifies that copies will be sent to ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), United Nations (UN) Commissions, and all diplomatic missions in The Gambia.
The letter also states that Momodou Yafaye Tamba has been given the authority to act and communicate on former President Jammeh’s behalf. It claims that under Gambian law, neither the Janneh Commission nor the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) have any legal standing.
“Furthermore, by their own acts and omissions, these bodies and/or their resultant white papers are considered null and void in law, and
therefore neither impede nor impinge on the rights and privileges of H.E. Former President Jammeh as a citizen, a political leader, and a former president and head of state,” the letter stated.
The letter noted that former President Jammeh has been lawfully entitled to these rights since January 21, 2017, the date he vacated office and left The Gambia in the interest of peace, national cohesion, and stability.
Additionally, it demanded that constitutional safeguards and legislative assurances suitable for a former head of state be immediately provided.
The letter underlined that, in precise accordance with the Gambia’s Constitution and the terms of the ECOWAS–AU–UN Joint Agreement, such actions are necessary to fully acknowledge, respect, and protect the fundamental rights, dignity, and security of former President Jammeh.
The return of former President Jammeh is affirmed as a constitutional right, particularly in line with the terms of the ECOWAS–AU–UN Joint Agreement of January 21, 2017, which ensures his freedom to visit The Gambia whenever he pleases, the statement continued.
The letter further emphasized that former President Jammeh is still dedicated to a peaceful return that is motivated by patriotism and faith.
It concluded by promising Gambians that peace, unity, and security would be the only things that would accompany his homecoming.
