On Monday, 27 April 2026, the Border Patrol Unit of The Gambia Immigration Department carried out a successful interception operation at Tanji Beach, preventing a group of sixty (60) individuals from embarking on an irregular migration journey by sea.

The group, discovered at a concealed hideout along the coastline, consisted of a diverse mix of nationalities: ten (10) Gambians, forty-seven (47) Senegalese, two (2) Guineans, and one (1) Ivorian. According to preliminary assessments, the individuals were preparing to depart under unsafe and unauthorized conditions, highlighting the continued risks associated with irregular migration routes along the West African coast.

Acting on intelligence and routine patrol efforts, officers swiftly secured the area and ensured the safety of all individuals involved. The interception not only prevented a potentially dangerous sea voyage but also underscored the ongoing vigilance and operational readiness of the Border Patrol Unit in addressing irregular migration activities.

The Gambia Immigration Department reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding human life, maintaining national security, and protecting the country’s territorial integrity. Authorities emphasized that such operations are part of broader efforts to combat human smuggling networks and discourage perilous migration attempts that often result in tragic outcomes.

Members of the public and coastal communities are strongly encouraged to remain alert and cooperative. The Department calls on citizens to promptly report any suspicious gatherings or unusual movements, particularly in coastal areas, to the nearest immigration office or security agency. Public support remains a critical component in ensuring timely interventions and preventing loss of life.

Through continued collaboration with communities and partner agencies, the Gambia Immigration Department aims to strengthen its efforts in promoting safe, legal migration practices while deterring unlawful activities along the nation’s borders.
