    GAMBIA: Igniting the Flames of Tribalism and Division in an Effort to Secure Re-election

    Mr. Sulayman Ben Suwareh told AG Radio that before the 2021 Presidential elections, Adama Barrow extended an invitation to all the elders of the different tribes in The Gambia, with the exception of the Mandinka elders.

    Mr. Suwareh stated that the reason for this was simply that the 2021 election campaign was conducted with a significant level of tribalism by President Adama Barrow and his NPP party.

    President Barrow aimed to instill the misconception that Mandinkas harbour animosity towards all other tribes in the nation. Barrow was attempting to convince Gambians that if the UDP were to be elected, they would remove all tribes from The Gambia. Mr. Suwareh remarked.

    Adama Barrow was merely revisiting Dembo By-Foroyce’s provocative exploration of tribalism. Dembo’s tribal remarks have resonated among Gambians, fuelling the flames of tribalism in a bid to secure President Barrow’s re-election. “Mr. Suwareh stated that Dembo Byforce confessed his divisive tribal politics was a strategy to garner votes for NPP.”
