Justice Jaiteh sentenced Ismaila Janneh to death after convicting him of the murder of Alieu Jallow at Brufut Ghana Town.
Delivering judgement before a packed courtroom, Justice Jaiteh handed down the death sentence and directed that the order be carried out by the Minister of Justice either by firing squad or by hanging.
Death sentences are subject to appeal, and it remains to be seen whether Janneh’s legal team will challenge the conviction or sentence before the Appeal Court.
However, The Gambia has maintained a moratorium on carrying out executions in recent years, meaning a death sentence does not necessarily translate into imminent execution.
