According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara was dispatched as a special envoy to Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on behalf of President Adama Barrow.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad would like to inform the public, especially Gambian nationals living in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, that it has been attentively observing developments regarding Gambian migrants in the country with great concern and interest. In consideration of the strong bilateral ties between The Gambia and Mauritania, His Excellency Mr. Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, has today dispatched His Excellency Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, as a Special Envoy to his counterpart, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania,” the statement read.

The Gambian Embassy in Nouakchott has been directed to enhance its engagement with Mauritanian authorities and improve communication with Gambian migrants to ensure their welfare is protected. Authorities have encouraged all Gambians residing in Mauritania to register with the embassy to enable more efficient support.

The government has shared contact details for important embassy officials, such as Deputy Ambassador Saikouba Jarju (Mobile: +222 36159457) and Counsellor Lamin Secka (Mobile: +222 20967984), to guarantee that Gambians in Mauritania can easily reach consular support.

The intervention by the Gambian government arises in response to increasing worries regarding the treatment of West African migrants in Mauritania, which serves as a crucial transit point for individuals aiming to reach Europe. Mauritania has a history of hosting a considerable migrant population; however, rights groups have expressed concerns regarding the detention and deportation of undocumented individuals.
