He emphasised that the decision is conclusive and called on all APRC members to recognise his authority.Former President Yahya Jammeh, founder of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), has declared his intention to reclaim leadership of the party by ousting interim chairman Yahya Tamba from his role. The announcement, delivered on January 22, 2025, through a WhatsApp audio message, signifies a notable change in the party’s leadership dynamics.
Jammeh pointed to internal divisions and insufficient progress under Tamba’s leadership as the rationale for his decision. He conveyed his dissatisfaction with the party’s direction, highlighting that although some members have made efforts, internal disputes and betrayal have obstructed the APRC’s progress.
“I have placed my trust in the interim chairmanship and leadership for a second time, yet the outcomes have not aligned with expectations.” “Therefore, I have decided to assume leadership of my party and will not delegate it to anyone again,” Jammeh declared. He emphasised that the decision is conclusive and called on all APRC members to recognise his authority.
“Effective immediately, I have removed Yahya Tamba from his position as chairman and interim leader. This decision has been awaited for quite some time. “I appreciate his service, but I cannot permit the party to persist on this declining path,” Jammeh expressed.
The former president conveyed a steadfast belief in Allah, claiming that no individual could dismantle the APRC. He assured party members that his decision was made with careful consideration and that he had been monitoring the party’s internal challenges while anticipating the right moment to take action.
Jammeh addressed worries regarding possible defections after his decision, asserting, “Those who wish to leave are free to do so, and we will thank Allah for their departure.” The door remains open for anyone who wishes to join the APRC without conditions.
He highlighted the importance of unity and collaborative effort to realise the party’s vision for national development. “If we unite with pure intentions and a common vision, we can elevate The Gambia to remarkable heights, by the grace of Allah,” he stated.
Jammeh cautioned against a lack of discipline and intolerance within the party, especially regarding any acts of disrespect or insults. “Those who disrespect others or their families do not belong in the APRC.” Allow them to give it a go and observe the results. “My presence in Equatorial Guinea will not hinder my ability to take action,” he warned.
In the announcement regarding Tamba’s removal, Jammeh made it clear that the other executive members will retain their positions. He encouraged those who have felt disconnected due to internal struggles to come back, promising them a more organised and disciplined atmosphere under his guidance.
“This marks a new chapter for the APRC. I will no longer accept any nonsense. “I want to make this clear to all party members,” he concluded.”
Jammeh’s choice to take back the APRC leadership highlights his commitment to re-establishing unity and discipline within the party in the face of current challenges.
