The Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) has placed Momodou Camara, the former Director of Finance at Banjul City Council (BCC) and current Director of Finance of Brikama Area Council, on administrative leave while an audit report is being investigated.

The LGSC voiced serious concerns about the audit findings pertaining to Banjul City Council for the fiscal years ending December 31, 2021, and December 31, 2022, as well as the EU Banjul-Ostende project for the period from January 1, 2020, to April 31, 2024, in a letter from the National Audit Office dated September 9, 2024, with reference number HC93/474/01/VII (4).

Regarding the above mentioned matter, I refer to a letter from the National Audit Office dated September 9, 2024, with reference number HC93/474/01/VII (4). The EU Banjul-Ostende project for the period 1 January 2020 to 31 April 2024, as well as the audit findings of Banjul City Council for the fiscal years ending 31 December 2021 and 31 December 2022, were noted with concern by the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) at its meeting on October 14, 2024.The LGSC has been copied on this correspondence and has asked the Inspector General of Police to conduct an investigation in response to these findings.

In light of this, the Commission said, “With immediate effect, the Commission has decided to send Mr. Momodou Camara, your Council’s Director of Finance, who was negatively cited in the aforementioned audit reports, on administrative leave. In addition, he will be paid half of his pay while the investigation is ongoing.

The commission came to the conclusion that the outcome of the investigation will determine any future choices pertaining to Mr. Camara. Lastly, he must turn over his duties to the finance manager right away, without fail. The Commission’s next choice or decisions will depend on how the Police inquiry turns out.

In addition, 27 additional employees of the same council have been placed on administrative leave due to misbehavior claims. Since then, Mr. Camara has been moved to the Brikama Area Council.
