Bread prices will rise nationwide on July 1st, 2025, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MOTIE). This choice is the result of in-depth discussions with important industry participants.

The Ministry clarified in a statement that a number of high-level meetings were held on May 27 and 28, 2025, following the collection of comprehensive data on bread manufacturing costs from bakeries nationwide. In order to negotiate changes in bread pricing, weight, and quality while carefully taking into account the interests of both customers and producers, the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC), the Consumer Consortium, and the Bakers Union met. Following these discussions, the following modifications were accepted by all parties:

The average weight of “Senfur” bread will rise from 133g to 160g, and each loaf will cost D12 instead of D10.
The typical weight of “Tapalapa” bread will rise from 165 to 190 grams, and each loaf will cost D12 instead of D10.

Therefore, the government notifies the public that the official price of Senfur will be D12 for a 160g loaf as of July 1st, 2025, and that the price of Tapalapa will also be D12 for a 190g loaf nationwide.

The Ministry also declared that bread will still be sold at bakers for D10 per loaf or D120 per dozen at the wholesale price.

In order to guarantee equitable and sustainable results that strike a balance between the interests of producers and consumers, the Ministry is “committed to ongoing engagement with all stakeholders in the bread supply chain,” the statement underlined. “We urge all parties involved to rigorously follow the agreed-upon weights and prices for Senfur and Tapalapa.”

The Ministry added that it will closely monitor adherence to these new standards through the Gambia Standards Bureau’s Legal Metrology Department. Additionally, the public will receive education on how to check the weight of freshly baked bread. Any bakery that is discovered to be selling underweight loaves will be in violation of the contract and subject to the proper penalties.
