GAMBIA: Defiant Jammeh Signals Intent to Return to Home

    Share

In a recent audio statement, former president Yahya Jammeh declared his plan to return to The Gambia and warned his detractors that “no one can stop” him. In the video, Jammeh said, “Arrest me and put me in jail,” challenging the police to take him into custody if they so desired. Do you believe that I’m scared to appear in court? “By the grace of the almighty Allah, I am coming back, whether anybody likes it or not,” he continued, expressing his certainty that he will regain a leadership position.

Jammeh’s comments seemed to be a direct jab at the administration and others he believes have attempted to prevent his return. He said, “They even went to marabouts that I will not come back,” accusing his critics of seeking supernatural intervention to keep him from returning to Gambian politics. Visit any marabouts; you have been visiting marabouts all around the world, including Guinea-Bissau, Mali, and Benin. “What will happen to me is what Allah has designated even before I was born, and nobody can change that,” he said, emphasizing that his destiny is entirely up to divine will.

In the message, Jammeh also called on followers to unite behind the APRC, pledging that if he returns, there will be fresh initiatives to improve the welfare of the nation. “I want to thank those who have been working very hard under very difficult circumstances and sometimes hostility,” he said, thanking his supporters for their unwavering dedication in the face of adversity.

“The road to freedom can be very far, can be very short. But you
will eventually, with trust in the almighty Allah, putting all our faith in the almighty Allah, we will reach the freedom destination.” Jammeh said in closing, urging his followers to have hope and perseverance.
