At a gathering to remember Solo Sandeng, UDP leader Ousainou Darboe spoke in a calm but emotional tone, reflecting on the meaning of the day and what it represents for the country.

He reminded those present of what happened on April 14, 2016, and how Sandeng stepped forward at a time when many were afraid. According to Darboe, Sandeng’s actions were not driven by power or recognition, but by a belief that Gambians deserved fairness and a voice in how they are governed.

“Solo was not looking for attention,” Darboe said. “He simply believed things could be better, and he was willing to stand up for that.”

Throughout his remarks, Darboe focused on the idea that Sandeng’s death changed something in the country. He said it brought people together and made many realize that silence was no longer an option. For him, the responsibility now lies with those still living to continue pushing for accountability and fairness.

He also spoke directly to young people, encouraging them to value the freedoms they have today. “What you see now did not just happen,” he said. “People made sacrifices. It is important not to forget that.”

Darboe did not ignore the personal side of the loss. Turning his attention to Sandeng’s family, he acknowledged their grief and the years they have had to live without him. He thanked them for their strength and said their loss is shared by many across the country.

As the event came to an end, his message remained simple. Remember what happened, learn from it, and continue working toward a country where such a loss never happens again. For Darboe, honouring Solo Sandeng is not just about words—it is about what people choose to do moving forward.
