After a formal request from his family, a post-mortem examination has been formally ordered for the late Omar Badjie. The order was granted by Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy following receipt of the family’s affidavit and accompanying documentation.
Members of Badjie’s family were called to the Banjulinding Police Station Wednesday morning, marking the start of the procedure. Under the direction of Commissioner Kujabi, the head of the West Coast Region, they went there and asked CID Officer Sowe for a postmortem.
After that, the family filled out a consent form, and witnesses gave their stories of what happened. Tumane Badjie, a family spokesman, and other community people were then driven to the Brikama Police Station by a Banjulinding CID police officer. Tumane then appeared before a Justice of the Peace and took an affidavit.
The post-mortem order to ascertain the cause of death was issued after the affidavit and official request were submitted to Principal Magistrate Mendy at the Brikama Magistrate Court.
Later, Commissioner Kujabi told the family that the examination, which is set for tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in Banjul, will be performed by an impartial medical professional.
The Crime Scene Management Unit will visit the alleged crime scene to conduct reconstruction and gather additional evidence, Commissioner Kujabi said in a related update. Stressing that “in a pursuit for justice, there is a starting point and an ending,” he urged the public, particularly the local young, to assist law enforcement.
Four police officers who are suspected of being involved in the case have been arrested and are being held until the conclusion of the complete inquiry, which has been called a major step toward accountability and openness.
