GAMBIA: Conspiracy to Obstruct Construction of a Maternity Hospital in Nianija

This is undoubtedly the final interview that Mr. Bakary Bah would have wished to conduct, given the involvement of close relatives and family members. In this interview, it becomes evident that Mr Bakary Bah was somewhat hesitant to name individuals. However, driven by his commitment to honesty, he feels compelled to shed light on the conspiracy led by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Seedy Njie, which aims to undermine the well-being and pursuit of happiness for the people of Nianija, his own birthplace.

Mr. Bakary Bah informed AG Radio that the residents of Nianija were seeking a proper maternity ward, as the existing facility in Chamen only had two beds. It is particularly troubling that midwives and doctors often have to resort to lighting candles or using their mobile phone lights to assist delivering mothers because of insufficient electricity. Given the circumstances, the Gambia Diaspora Club has chosen to step in and provide funding for the essential maternity ward at Chamen, Nianija, as both the government and the Ministry of Health have not met the needs of the Nianija Constituency.

Mr. Bakary Bah stated that the Gambia Diaspora Club has designated the Chamen Nianija Health Care System for the construction of a fully equipped maternity ward, and the Ministry of Health has provided a Clearance Certificate following the completion of all necessary official consultations. The Regional Health Director was present at the foundation stone laying ceremony, where the project contract company manager spoke to the attendees, recognised the signed contract, and assured timely project delivery.

Before the excitement from the Project launch had subsided, certain government officials who had granted the official clearance for the project chose to obstruct its progress by revoking that clearance for political motives, ultimately undermining the welfare of the people of Nianija, Mr. Bah stated.

It is unsettling to discover in this interview that Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie was involved in conspiring with Amadou Camara, the National Assembly representative for the Nianija constituency, along with Village District Chief Dawda York, to obstruct this project. Mr. Modou Cham, a member of the UDP party, was perceived as a threat despite having no involvement in this project. It is unfortunate that whenever a significant project arrives in The Gambia, it tends to be derailed if it is not led by the NPP government. This pattern has been evident in the country since President Adama Barrow assumed office.

However, Mr. Sulayman Ben Suwareh is also quite taken aback. Both he and Pa Samba Jaw are accused of being involved in the Nianija project and collaborating with the Gambia Diaspora Club. Mr. Suwareh claims that Seedy Njie has been disseminating falsehoods and rumours about him and Pa Samba, and he has refuted any association with the Gambia Diaspora Club. Mr. Suwareh discloses that a source has informed him that the Minister of Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, acknowledged that Seedy Njie is the one responsible for all these issues, but he intends to address the matter in parliament.

Mr. Sulayman Ben Suwareh asserts that it is time for Gambians to recognise the wolf in sheep’s clothing. The President ought to be cautioned to distance himself from Seedy Njie and individuals of that nature. The same Seedy Njie, who played a role in the political impasse of 2016, went into exile alongside Yahya Jammeh, only to abandon Jammeh and align himself with Barrow’s camp. This is Seedy Njie. Whenever a mother, child, or baby dies in Nianija, the government should be held accountable for their deaths, and may divine justice befall them for their malevolent intentions towards the people of The Gambia, stated Mr. Sulayman Ben Suwareh.
