President Adama Barrow has promoted three officers of the Gambia Armed Forces. Chief of Defence Staff Ousman Gomez has been elevated to the rank of lieutenant general.
The promotions, announced on August 4 also elevate Deputy Chief of Defence Staff Sait Njie from brigadier general to general. Colonel Alagie Sanneh, commander of the Republican National Guard was promoted to brigadier general.
In a statement the Gambia Armed Forces said the promotions were approved by President Adama Barrow in his capacity as president and commander‑in‑chief exercising powers granted to him under the Constitution.
The Gambia Armed Forces said the promotions followed the officers’ appointments as Chief of Defence Staff Deputy Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Republican National Guard respectively. The new ranks the statement said, reflect the responsibilities that come with those positions.
On behalf of the Gambia Armed Forces the statement said, the Gambia Armed Forces wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the General Officers on their well‑deserved promotions. The Gambia Armed Forces equally wish them a successful and distinguished tenure, in office.
