    GAMBIA: Barrow Greenlights Brufut Market, Funds Women’s Empowerment

    On Thursday, January 1, 2026, President Adama Barrow met with a delegation from Brufut in Kombo North to discuss important issues impacting the community and explore potential solutions. The meeting took place at State House in Banjul, with over 400 residents in attendance, along with the President and his entourage.

    During the gathering, the Alkalo of Brufut, Malamin Kajor Manneh, expressed gratitude to President Barrow for the road construction projects initiated by his government in Brufut, characterizing them as remarkable advancements that the community had sought for many years.

    Alkalo Manneh urged the President to assist Brufut in establishing a proper market and vehicle garage. He also proposed converting the “strasser field” into a versatile youth and sports centre.

    Kaddijatou Jallow, a prominent women’s leader from the Brufut fish landing site, shared her joy at the opportunity to meet the President. She commended the enhancements at Brufut beach, particularly the addition of streetlights and water taps, which have significantly improved the working conditions for women engaged in fish processing. She observed that women are now able to work safely at the fish landing sites until late evening, thanks to the enhanced lighting. She additionally sought financial support on behalf of the women.

    Yankuba AK Sanno, the Chairperson of the Sannehmentereng Constituency, also addressed the event. He expressed confidence that the community will cast a majority vote in support of President Barrow in the 2026 Presidential election.

    During his address, Mr, Barrow addressed concerns regarding the Brufut Strasser football field, assuring the youth that the associated land fees would be waived once the legal framework is finalized. The President has sanctioned the construction of a market for the women of Brufut and has allocated D200,000 in financial support for those involved in fish processing.
