On September 10, 2025, the Office of the President announced that Auditor General Modou Ceesay will be appointed Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment. However, Ceesay declined the position.
Mr. Ceesay formally declined the appointment, reiterating his intention to remain in his current position as Auditor General in a statement released on Thursday.
He underlined his commitment to carrying out the National Audit Office’s (NAO) constitutional duty, stating that his work is focused on enhancing public financial management and enhancing Gambians’ quality of life via efficient public sector auditing.
In addition to urging stakeholders to continue supporting transparency and accountability in public finance, the statement states that Mr. Ceesay is committed to carrying out his duties as the Auditor General and to diligently carrying out the responsibilities granted to him by the Gambia Constitution in order to improve the lives of citizens through public sector auditing.
Mr. Ceesay emphasized the significance of the NAO’s role in advancing good governance and advocated for coordinated efforts to strengthen the nation’s financial governance institutions.
