GAMBIA: Hon. Almameh Gibba Declares his Opposition to the 2024 Draft Constitution

The National Assembly Member for Foni Kansala, Hon. Almameh Gibba, has stated that he is willing to “bury it 40 feet deep” in his opposition to the 2024 draft constitution.

Speaking on the subject, Hon. Gibba voiced his displeasure with the way the government has handled attempts to amend the constitution, especially in light of the 2020 draft constitution’s failure.

“My position is very clear: this will always be the result when the government is not prepared to move in the proper path. After spending millions on the 2020 draft constitution, they let us down. They proceeded to draft their own constitution, which I would never consider. When I noticed it on our schedule, I had already conferred with my constituents. However, 98 percent of the people I spoke with opposed it. They stated that they don’t want it because it is a Barrow book. Second, if you advocate for accountability and honesty in government, why present a proposal that contradicts those principles? is a waste of time and effort,” said Hon. Gibba.

The Foni Kansala NAM has denounced what he claims is the influence of Western interests and foreign organisations, blaming them of interfering in domestic matters.

“I refuse to participate in that. They don’t care how it occurs; they simply want it to happen. A constitution is not good if it does not provide institutions authority. Since the 1997 constitution is superior to the 2024 one, I will continue to support it. Let me give you an example to demonstrate it. Power is established in both constitutions. According to the 2024 draft asset statement, it only applies when you first enter office, but no one will hold you accountable for stealing after you leave office, he claimed.

Additionally, Hon. Gibba attacked President Adama Barrow, claiming that his fortune had increased suspiciously while he was in office.

Although Barrow lived in a shack in Mankamang Kunda, as we all know, he now owns mansions there. He constructed multi-story structures worth millions of dollars in less than three years. Everything belonging to Jammeh was seized; even his compound was removed and turned over to the fourth infantry unit. We are also calling for him to be subject to the same treatment in the upcoming administration. He will have the fifth infantry battalion as his compound. They therefore draughted a constitution that suited them, and we shall not participate in it. We have our arsenals ready to ensure that we bury it 40 feet deep,” he said.
