A new political movement has emerged, known as the National Alliance For Accelerated Advancement (NAFAA). Its members claim that the organisation aims to promote democratic values and encourage youth participation in governance.
The founders expressed that they are young Gambians who feel ‘frustrated with the current administration’. The NAFAA project is a socio-conservative political movement dedicated to the pursuit of self-reliance, economic freedom, patriotism, wealth creation, and respect for fundamental human rights, reflecting the essence of a sovereign independent state. “It was conceived in the lead-up to the 2016 elections by a group of concerned Gambian youths, guided by seasoned experts from various walks of life,” the group informed The Standard yesterday.
“We are committed to uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds, regardless of tribe, religion, race, gender, or abilities, to collectively achieve improved living standards and accelerated development.” We are committed to guiding and fostering economic prosperity for The Gambia and its people, in line with our valued inclusive and conservative principles, which have always ensured peace in The Gambia’, NAFAA stated.
The movement has announced its selection of Ousainou Allen as its presidential candidate. Allen is a social rights advocate, educationist, youth leader, and philanthropist recognised for his significant contributions to education, sports, and community development.
Allen, a civil engineer and prominent advocate for the advancement of the construction industry, is recognised for orchestrating the establishment of the International Open University (IOU) in The Gambia and later in three additional countries in the sub-region.
NAFAA stated that its leader has shown exceptional leadership abilities throughout his tenure at IOU and beyond, while also fostering robust relationships with the ministries of trade, works, basic and higher education through initiatives such as the establishment of a national minimum wage, TVET, and STEM programs.
“He has also built strong working relationships with Arabic and Islamic institutions throughout The Gambia.” During his tenure, the introduction of the one-year Intensive English Course was particularly significant, acting as a transformative force that enhanced access to traditional higher education institutions and various opportunities for Arabic/Islamic students and graduates,” NAFAA remarked about its leader.
Mr. Allen established the first Islamic Montessori school in The Gambia, emphasising quality-based, child-centered education. He also serves as vice president of Concerned Citizens, a civil society organisation focused on social development.
Mr. Allen’s diverse roles underscore his steadfast dedication to promoting social causes through political and social activism in The Gambia, as well as his advocacy for a culturally and economically independent Africa,” NAFAA stated.
