GAMBIA: A Former Company Registrar Arrested for Contempt and Perjury in the Janneh Commission Asset Investigation.

Mr. Alieu Jallow, the former Registrar of Companies, has been officially charged with perjury and contempt of the National Assembly by the Special Select Committee looking into the sale and transfer of assets under the Janneh Commission.

The committee claims that before sending his official laptop in for forensic examination, Jallow purposefully erased and changed important files on it. Investigators found that crucial documents had been seen, altered, and occasionally deleted entirely.

Counsel Aji Saine Kah asked the Sergeant-at-Arms to make Jallow’s arrest and turn him over to the Inspector General of Police in light of these conclusions. The request was granted by the committee’s chairperson, Hon. Abdoulie Ceesay, who noted that Jallow had been given numerous chances to clarify his actions but had not done so.

“Forensic evidence confirms deliberate tampering with documents and provision of false testimony. The application for arrest is hereby granted,” Hon. Ceesay said.

He said that Jallow’s actions, which included purposefully misleading the committee, amounted to contempt of Parliament and obstruction of procedures. Records of livestock sales, inspection reports, internal memos, and farm inventories in Farato and Banjulinding were among the purportedly tampered documents.

It was discovered that Jallow, the only custodian of these assets and Registrar General during the asset disposals supervised by the Janneh Commission, had obstructed the investigation and withheld important material. A thorough forensic analysis of his official laptop produced the results.

In compliance with Orders 102 and 140 of the National Assembly Standing Orders and Sections 109 and 110 of the 1997 Gambia Constitution, his detention was carried out. After making the arrest, the National Assembly’s Sergeant-at-Arms turned Jallow over to the Office of the Inspector General of Police for additional examination.
