Under the theme “Digitalization in harnessing The Gambia’s human capital and resource potential for inclusive prosperity,” President Adama Barrow led the nation in celebrating The Gambia’s 61st Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, at the historic McCarthy Square in Banjul.

The President was joined by First Lady Fatouba Barrow, Madam Sarjo Mballo Barrow, and Vice President Mamadou BS Jallow.

The event featured a spectacular march past by the armed and security forces, schoolchildren, and representatives of government and non-governmental institutions. The Gambia Armed Forces Band and Drums added vibrant music, creating a colorful and patriotic atmosphere.

The anniversary commemorates the country’s independence from colonial rule in 1965, led by the late first President, Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara. The day symbolizes national unity, peace, and harmony, embodying The Gambia’s nickname, “The Smiling Coast of Africa.”

In his address, President Barrow emphasized that independence carries ongoing responsibilities.

He called on citizens to focus on collective national development and highlighted the need to address increasingly complex challenges as the nation matures.

The President unveiled the government’s National Development Plan, “Yiriwa,” a strategic framework designed to translate political independence into economic interdependence, social inclusion, and national resilience.

He underscored infrastructure achievements, investments in agriculture and education, and the importance of citizens prioritizing the national good.

The celebrations were attended by senior military and security officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Deputy CDS, service chiefs, and other dignitaries, reflecting the significance of the day for all Gambians.
