GAMBIA: 61 Years of Independence. But Are We Truly Free?

    Share

Sixty-one years ago, we ended colonial rule and began to govern ourselves. But independence must mean more than a flag, an anthem, and annual ceremonies.

Has independence delivered liberty, dignity, prosperity, transparency, and accountability for the majority of Gambians?

Taxes, loans, and aid continue to increase. Yet quality healthcare, education, electricity, water, transport, and jobs remain uneven, limited, and expensive for many citizens. Colonial-era laws and systems still linger. Public institutions too often underperform while citizens bear the burden.

A republic cannot be judged by the success of a few while the majority struggle.

After 61 years, Gambians should be enjoying high standards of living, meaningful opportunities, and efficient delivery of quality public services that are available, accessible, affordable, and functional.

The Gambia is well endowed with land, people, resources, and potential. What is required is accountable governance and active citizenship.

    Independence belongs to the people.
The Republic belongs to the people.
The State belongs to the people.

It is time for citizens to rise beyond slogans and ceremonies and demand and build the republic we deserve.

Our Independence. Our Democracy. Our Responsibility. 🇬🇲
