Modibo Touray, Tor Senghore, Pa Malick Secka, and numerous stevedores in The Gambia feel a profound sense of disappointment that their challenging situations continue to be neglected by both the Gambia Ports Authority and the government. In an interaction with AG Radio presenter Salieu Njie, they expressed their frustration over the lack of response after sending numerous letters to various government bodies, including President Adama Barrow himself.
The Gambia Dock and Maritime Workers’ Union asserts that it is time to take action to remedy the prolonged underpayment and exploitation faced by stevedores at the Gambia Ports Authority. There is a desire for President Barrow to take action in reorganizing the country’s stevedoring industry, allowing it to attain independence. They express concern for the dock workers who have suffered from starvation wages for an extended period.
Stevedoring is the process by which dock workers manage the loading, unloading, and discharging of cargo onto or from a vessel. Independence as stevedores is regarded as the standard practice in all countries, including Senegal.
