Seven opposition political organisations are expected to formally establish a new electoral alliance through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Friday, 14 August 2026.
The ceremony, organised by the Gambia First Coalition and the UDP Alliance, is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Jama Hall, Kairaba Hotel. A joint press briefing will follow the signing, according to an invitation sent to media houses, editors, news directors and journalists.
The proposed alliance brings together five registered political parties and two political movements ahead of The Gambia’s 2026 and 2027 general elections.
Its members are the Alliance for Democracy and Development, Citizens’ Coalition for Change, Gambia Alliance for National Development, Gambian People’s Advancement Party, Golden Era Party, People’s Progressive Party and United Democratic Party.
ADD, GANU, GPAP, PPP and UDP are identified as registered political parties, while CCC and GEP are described as political movements.
The organisers said the MoU will formally establish the opposition alliance and provide a platform for cooperation ahead of the forthcoming elections. They described the agreement as a significant development in the country’s democratic process.
The alliance will remain open to other political parties and movements that may wish to participate. However, the invitation does not provide details about the coalition’s leadership, candidate-selection arrangements, policy priorities or campaign strategy. These issues may be addressed during the joint briefing after the signing ceremony.
Media organisations have been encouraged to cover the event to help ensure that Gambians receive information about the emerging opposition arrangement and its possible role in the upcoming electoral contests.
The event is expected to draw national attention as opposition groups seek closer coordination and a stronger collective presence before the next electoral cycle.
