Four senior officials of the Gambia Democratic Congress reportedly walked out of a recent executive meeting after opposing the party’s proposed decision to join the National People’s Party-led alliance.
Senior party sources familiar with the discussions identified the officials as GDC Administrative Secretary I Ebrima Nyang; former Niamina East National Assembly Member Hon. Omar Ceesay; finance executive Essa Baldeh; and executive member Kebba Gaye.
According to the sources, the walkout occurred during lengthy and sometimes contentious deliberations over whether the GDC should align itself with President Adama Barrow’s governing coalition ahead of The Gambia’s presidential election scheduled for December 5, 2026.
The four officials reportedly objected to the proposed partnership and left the meeting before it ended.
Despite their opposition, the proposal to enter the alliance was approved. However, the decision was not unanimous, revealing divisions within the party’s executive over its political direction and electoral strategy.
The reported disagreement comes as the GDC prepares to formalise its partnership with the ruling NPP. Sources said GDC leader and secretary-general Mama Kandeh is expected to meet President Barrow on Wednesday to sign a memorandum of understanding establishing the alliance.
At the time of publication, neither the GDC nor the NPP had publicly confirmed the agreement. The specific terms and conditions contained in the proposed memorandum were also not immediately available.
Kerr Fatou said it had not independently verified the circumstances surrounding the reported walkout. The four officials named by the sources had not publicly commented, while the GDC had yet to issue an official statement addressing the internal deliberations or reported dissent within its leadership.
