A deadly shooting unfolded at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, May 18, 2026, leaving several people dead and shocking the local community.

According to authorities, two teenage suspects opened fire outside the mosque shortly before midday prayers. Five adult men were killed during the attack, while the two suspects later died from what investigators described as self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Police said one of the victims was a security guard who reportedly acted quickly during the incident and may have helped prevent even greater loss of life. Worshippers and children attending activities at the mosque were safely evacuated as heavily armed officers responded to the scene.

Investigators are now examining the possibility that the attack was motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. Officials said evidence recovered during the investigation included language and material pointing to possible extremist views held by the suspects.

The Islamic Center of San Diego, one of the largest mosques in the region, was placed under heavy security following the shooting as local police, federal agents, and emergency crews secured the area and interviewed witnesses.

Community leaders and public officials condemned the violence and expressed support for the Muslim community, describing the attack as both tragic and deeply disturbing. Counseling services and community support efforts are also being organized for families affected by the incident.
