GAMBIA: GALA Activists Jailed for Marking One Year of Anti-Corruption Fight

Share

The current situation regarding the GALA members is deeply concerning. The arrest of GALA members for peacefully celebrating a year of advocacy against corruption is a blatant overreach of power by the Barrow administration.

While the IGP and Attorney General employ tactics that mirror a dark, dictatorial past, the opposition’s silence and fragmentation are equally alarming. Issuing “useless” press releases from the safety of home is not leadership; it is a dereliction of duty to the Gambian people.

By failing to form a united front, the opposition effectively grants the state permission to continue its repressive behaviour. A democracy cannot survive if those seeking to lead it lack the courage to stand physically in solidarity with those being persecuted for demanding accountability.

If the opposition cannot find the courage to unite and demand the immediate, unconditional release of these citizens now, they prove themselves incapable of protecting the rights of Gambians in the future. Resistance must be shown in the streets, not just on social media.
