Coroner’s inquest into the death of Omar Badjie points fingers at the police after the Office of the Chief Justice has announced that a coroner’s inquest has found that Omar Badjie, a resident of Mandinarin Village, died as a result of an assault carried out by police officers and has recommended that the matter be referred for criminal prosecution.

Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow confirmed he has received the final report from Principal Magistrate and Coroner Anna O. Mendy regarding the September 26, 2025, incident in Mandinaring village. The findings contradicted the police version that Omar Badjie fell during the pursuit and was later announced dead.

Following an extensive inquiry that included the examination of twelve witnesses, a review of postmortem medical records, and a formal visit to the scene of the incident, the Coroner delivered a definitive verdict.

The report concludes that Omar Badjie died from an acute brain injury, the Coroner’s report also determined the injury resulted from a combination of physical exertion, assault and stress by police officers during their pursuit and apprehension of Omar Badjie.

Chief Justice Jallow expressed satisfaction with the “correctness, legality, and propriety” of the findings and the regularity of the proceedings.

Furthermore, the Chief Justice has now forwarded the entire record of the proceedings to the Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The Coroner’s report recommends that the matter be referred to the DPP for the consideration of criminal proceedings against the police officers involved in the encounter.

The case now moves into the hands of the state’s prosecutors, as the public awaits word on whether formal charges will be filed against the officers identified in the investigation.
