As he steps aside from the position of Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS); a role he held with distinction since the party’s founding in 1986, the nation pauses, not to bid farewell, but to acknowledge the ascent of a statesman whose relevance now transcends partisan boundaries.
His political life has been defined by fearless dedication and moral clarity. From the earliest days of advocacy, through years of democratic struggle, to his historic role as spokesperson and contributions to the 2016 Coalition that ended 22 years of dictatorship during a perilous political impasse, Hon. Halifa Sallah stood firm when the nation needed courage most. His contribution during that defining moment alone places him among the architects of modern Gambian democracy.
He did not merely represent a political party; he embodied a national conscience. His advocacy for justice, accountability, transparent governance, and equitable socio-economic development impacted the entire nation. In times of uncertainty, his consistency and intellectual honesty provided direction. In times of fear, his resilience reassured a people yearning for freedom. His politics was never transactional.
