    GAMBIA: CoPG Condemns PURA’s Failure to Deliver a Unified Emergency Numbers System

    Share

    The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) strongly condemns the continued failure of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) to effectively implement a unified, toll-free national emergency numbers system.

    It is unacceptable that emergency numbers in The Gambia remain non–toll-free and largely restricted to QCell subscribers, excluding users of other GSM networks. This situation represents a clear regulatory lapse and a direct threat to public safety. Emergency services must be accessible to all citizens, irrespective of network provider.

    For over a year, CoPG has engaged PURA and GSM operators to advocate for a functional, toll-free emergency system to support Police, Fire and Rescue, and Ambulance services. Despite these efforts, progress has been minimal. CoPG is particularly disturbed by QCell’s apparent unwillingness to cooperate in a project of national importance.

    The absence of a single, toll-free emergency number compromises response times and endangers lives during medical emergencies, fires, and security incidents. These delays are indefensible.

    CoPG therefore demands that PURA immediately publish a clear implementation timeline;
    Compel full participation of all GSM operators;
    Guarantee a toll-free, nationwide emergency numbers system without further delay.

    The safety of Gambians must not be held hostage by institutional inertia or commercial interests. PURA must act decisively and without excuse.
