GAMBIA: Lawmakers Secure Bigger Pensions and Gratuities as National Assembly Approves Bill

On Wednesday, The Gambia’s National Assembly approved the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2025. This legislation seeks increase gratuity and pension benefits for lawmakers, their families, and designated successors in the event of death, resignation, or recall from office.

The bill, presented by nominated member Kebba Lang Fofana, successfully passed its second reading following a vigorous discussion regarding its scope and possible consequences. The matter has now been referred to the Assembly Business Committee, which will decide whether it should be reviewed by a standing committee or the Committee of the Whole Assembly.

The supporters of the legislation contended that it tackles enduring deficiencies in current law and offers essential financial safeguards to the families of former legislators.

According to the proposed amendment, should a member pass away during their five-year term after having served a minimum of one year, their next of kin would be entitled to a gratuity amounting to 25 percent of the total emoluments earned by the member while in office. Lawmakers who resign or are recalled after serving a minimum of one year are subject to the same provision.

The supporters argue that the bill guarantees equity and acknowledges the contributions of National Assembly members, whereas detractors have expressed concerns regarding its financial implications for public funds. The Assembly will persist in its discussions as the bill advances through the forthcoming phases of examination.
