The Unite for Change Movement is a new political movement that was announced by Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), with the goal of addressing the urgent needs of Gambians both domestically and internationally.

During the announcement, Bensouda said, “This is a call for all Gambians who are well-meaning, young and old, male and female, home or abroad, to come together and join the movement for change.”

He clarified that he and other like-minded Gambians started the movement with the goal of eventually turning it into a legitimate political party. The effort aims to establish a representative platform that attends to the concerns of people in every town, community, association, and diaspora community across the globe, he said.

Bensouda expressed hope that Gambians might create a nation that is among the greatest in the world with teamwork, shared resources, and a common goal.

He cited the startling number of young Gambians risking their lives to pursue chances elsewhere as one of the nation’s problems. More than 1,200 Gambian adolescents perished last year while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe, according to statistics he cited.

The mayor voiced concern about this trend and emphasized how important it is to provide possibilities at home to offer young people hope and a reason to stay.

The smallest nation in Africa and among the smallest worldwide is Gambia. Furthermore, there is no justification for us to not advance further. Bensouda emphasized that this is a call to action.
