Widespread indignation has been generated throughout The Gambia by the death of 27-year-old Omar Badjie, who reportedly passed away in police detention on Friday. Political leaders, civil society actors, and human rights defenders are increasingly calling for justice and responsibility.
Police personnel are accused of brutally beating Badjie, a Mandinary resident, before he passed away. Concerns regarding widespread police brutality in the nation have been rekindled by the episode.
Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, said the episode was indicative of more serious issues within the Gambia Police Force (GPF).
“A larger problem inside the Gambia Police Force is shown in Omar Badjie’s death at the hands of the GPF. Since the 1990s, the Gambia Police Force has engaged in police violence against defenseless youngsters, which suggests a structural problem. Bensouda stated, “This case needs to be thoroughly investigated, and reforms should happen as soon as possible.”
Yankuba Darboe, the chairman of the Brikama Area Council, also denounced the incident and expressed support for the Mandinary community.
“We denounce the police brutality against our teenagers and offer our condolences and prayers to the people of Mandanary! We call for a prompt investigation into Mr. Omar Badjie’s killing and the prosecution of those responsible as soon as possible,” he said.
Similar worries were expressed by activists and civil society organizations. Gambians Against Looted Assets’ public relations officer, Omar Saibo Canara, cautioned against becoming complacent in the way the issue is being handled.
“Omar Badjie’s life matters. Justice must win out. I appeal to every good-hearted Gambian’s conscience. It is imperative that Omar’s life not be squandered and that this case not be dismissed as another file collecting dust. We need to demand answers. Accountability must be demanded. He stated, “We must demand justice—not just for Omar, but for everyone who has been killed, tortured, or still bears the scars of state brutality.”
Not to be outdone, prominent human rights advocate Madi Jobarteh also voiced her opinion.
Omar Badjie deserves justice! Police brutality is unacceptable. No Impunity! Gambia Made a Decision for Justice, Liberty, and Peace! He said, “#Accountability.”
The Gambia Police Force says it has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Omar’s death and offered its sympathies to Badjie’s family.
