Following a month-long sting operation that ended on September 16, 2025, the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) has announced the seizure of an estimated D40 million worth of ecstasy pills. Two Gambian nationals were also arrested as a result of the operation, which was deemed to be among the agency’s most important in recent years.
DLEAG claims that as part of its stepped-up campaign against drug usage and trafficking, 401,767 suspected ecstasy tablets were seized.
Fallou Cham and Mariama Jawara, the two suspects, were taken into custody at separate locations. Jawara was arrested at her home in Brufut, and Cham was caught with 1,767 pills at London Corner in Serrekunda.
Investigations later revealed a sizable narcotics hoard concealed in a Sukuta home that was utilized as a storage bunker. Eleven suitcases with 80 suspected ecstasy packets—each containing 5,000 pills—were found by the officers. Additionally, D967,700, 175,000 CFA, and 50,100 euros were confiscated by authorities, who think they were the proceeds of the illegal activity.
According to preliminary investigation, the medications in question were imported from Holland. According to a statement from DLEAG, Mariam, whose husband is allegedly living in Holland, sent the aforementioned substances to The Gambia and is instrumental in organizing the drug trafficking activities.
While investigations are ongoing, both suspects are still being held.
