GAMBIA: Two Men in Military Uniforms Reportedly Fled Nianija Following vulture killings

On Sunday, August 10, the Chief of Nianija, Dawda York, reported that two men in military uniforms fled on a motorbike after being seen in the bush, where they were allegedly killing vultures.

“I have discovered that many vultures were killed and their feet removed,” Chief York stated. He detailed that the initial incident occurred approximately eleven days prior, when the same individuals were allegedly observed shooting the birds.

He stated that the men returned on Saturday. “Upon hearing about it, I was informed that they ventured into the forest.” “Later, I pursued them, but I was unable to locate them; I only found the heads and the legs,” he stated. “Upon their arrival, a woman informed them that the chief is inquiring about them.” They mounted their bike and departed. This occurred on Saturday, and they departed, leaving behind the remains of the vultures.

Witnesses reported that the men were dressed in military attire, but they were not wearing hats. “It appears they are soldiers, yet without a hat.” “They arrived and began shooting them with guns,” he stated.

The chief stated that he had notified the Governor regarding the incident. “Since that incident, the community is in turmoil because we are uncertain about who sent them and what their intentions are, and we are unsure if the government is aware of the situation,” he said.

Despite the inability to apprehend the men, he stated that the army stationed at a nearby checkpoint had been alerted about “two men with a gun dressed in military fatigues.”

“We informed the governor and we urge the government to investigate the matter as it is damaging the reputation of the soldiers,” Chief York stated.
