As the deadline approaches on the ultimatum issued by Amie Bensouda for an apology or the threat of a D144M defamation suit, Alhajie Mamadi Kurang has countered with a request for D200M in compensation, along with additional demands. His legal team claims this amount reflects the distress, grief, and reputational harm resulting from the release of Bensouda’s letter.
Last week, Bensouda, the lead counsel of the Janneh Commission of Inquiry into former president Jammeh’s assets, alleged in a widely circulated cease and desist letter that Mr. Kurang, who served as executive secretary at the commission, had been making false claims against her regarding her work at the commission.
Attorneys representing her stated that Kurang’s allegations could harm her esteemed reputation, thus requesting a public apology and a retraction of the claims from all his social media posts within seven days, or he would face a D144M lawsuit.
Yesterday, Mr. Kurang reacted in a comparable manner. His lawyers stated that Madame Bensouda’s letter, disseminated through various channels, has depicted him as a liar, a fraudster, an opportunist, and an uncultured and unreasonable individual.
“In light of these circumstances, our client is requesting a public apology, a retraction of the claims, and compensatory damages totalling D200M, along with an immediate halt to any further defamatory publications against him,” stated Kurang’s lawyers in a letter to Amie Bensouda.
