The opposition PDOIS’s secretary general, Halifa Sallah, has responded to rumours that he would rejoin the front lines of politics.
Although it has been widely believed that the highly regarded veteran politician might not run for office again, his close ally Sidia Jatta was recently reported to have implied that Sallah might do so if there is a substantial popular demand.
However, Mr. Sallah stated that the question of whether he will return or not is unimportant, adding that his focus is still on the need for systemic change in Gambian politics rather than personal ambition, in response to a question about the possibility of his comeback in a Star FM exclusive that will air today.
“Those who want me to run for office again ought to be sensible enough to back whoever I choose. I have no interest in working with job seekers, so if someone tells you that it should be Halifa and Halifa alone, they are not sincere. And I’ll never be their ally. I will support the Gambian people if they ask me to, but it doesn’t matter if I compete or not; I don’t want to discuss it,” he emphasised.
Mr. Sallah claimed that his choice to not run for office again was well-thought-out and beneficial to the nation.
