The NPP, NRP, all the nominated members and some Independent members have just voted against diaspora voting, 25 Vs 14.” by Hon, Madi Ceesay, Member of Parliament.
I strongly condemn the disgraceful decision by the NPP and its allies to vote against diaspora voting. This is not just a rejection of a fundamental right; it is the deliberate weaponisation of the National Assembly against Gambians abroad. It is a calculated, cowardly act of disenfranchisement designed to silence a vital part of our nation and consolidate power through suppression rather than democracy.
The Gambian diaspora has long been the backbone of our country economically, politically, and socially. They stood at the forefront of the fight for democracy, mobilised resources to sustain families, and contributed to national development in ways the lawmakers who rejected them failed to do. Yet, despite their sacrifices, they are now being denied their constitutional right to participate in the governance of their homeland. This is not just an attack on the diaspora. It is an attack on democracy itself.
Let it be clear: Those who voted against diaspora voting have declared that Gambians abroad are good enough to send money but not good enough to have a voice. This is a shameless attempt to rig the political system in their favour, driven by fear of an electorate that demands accountability and transparency. A fully enfranchised Gambian population, home and abroad, would hold them accountable for their failures. And they know it.
We will not accept this injustice, and we will not allow the National Assembly to be turned into a tool of political oppression. We reject this betrayal and will fight for the complete restoration of voting rights for all citizens. The right to vote is not a privilege but a fundamental democratic right, and no government can take it away.
This is not the end of the fight; it is only the beginning. The Gambia belongs to all Gambians, and we will not rest until every voice is heard, every vote counts, and democracy prevails.
We resist! We mobilise!
We reclaim our rights!
