GAMBIA: CBG Board Vacancies: Ensuring Accountability And Transparency

    Share

The Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG) is again in the spotlight after the Open Gambia Platform revealed that two board members—Mr Ousman Abdoulie Sowe and Ms Eudora Thomas—continued to hold their positions even though their terms had expired.

On Tuesday, February 11, both individuals failed to attend a scheduled Financial Stability Sector Reports meeting, a conspicuous absence that followed our publication exposing their expired tenure. By choosing not to appear, they have acknowledged that their appointments are no longer valid and should do the honourable thing by tendering their resignations.

The resignations will create two vacancies on the Board that must be filled by the Central Bank of The Gambia Act 2018. When we get there, The Open Gambia Platform will closely monitor the appointment process to ensure transparency and prevent political interference or the placement of unqualified cronies.

Governor Saidy will be under heightened scrutiny and urged to recommend qualified candidates with substantial private-sector and international expertise. Such appointments will be essential for restoring confidence in the Bank’s governance and reinforcing the safeguards against potential power misuse. We will also call on the oversight agencies to rigorously vet nominees to verify that they meet the necessary criteria. The Open Gambia Platform remains prepared to expose wrongdoing if these agencies fail.

Potential nominees approached by the Governor should ensure they meet the positions’ legal and professional requirements. Should the authorities neglect their due diligence, the Open Gambia Platform stands ready to expose any irregularities, underscoring our commitment to safeguarding transparency, accountability, and integrity in The Gambia’s public institutions.
