    GAMBIA: Police Reverse Decision on Magistrate’s Orderlies

    The police have reversed their decision to recall officers assigned to magistrates.

    The orderlies were removed last week without any explanation, leading to frustration among the magistrates who expressed worries about their safety.

    In light of these developments, the office of the Chief Justice organised a meeting with the Inspector General of Police and officials from the Ministry of Justice to discuss the matter that had halted court proceedings due to magistrates engaging in a sit-down strike.

    On the previous day, Neneh Cham, the president of the Gambia Bar Association, informed The Standard that after the meeting at the Chief Justice’s office, the police have consented to reinstate the orderlies to their designated postings and to allocate orderlies to other magistrates as well. “We were pleased with the decision to reinstate the orderlies.” We express our gratitude to the police and the office of the Chief Justice. “This is what is meant to occur,” Ms Cham added.
