In fulfillment of my commitment to support women in the Gambia especially in less privileged communities, yesterday together with the Refela executive members presided over the inauguration of a borehole for the women of BAJANA VILLAGE IN FONI, WEST COAST REGION . This highly impactful intervention was made possible thanks to the support and collaboration of my dear friend and partner, His Excellency Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar (Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister of Pakistan). In appreciation of this magnanimous gesture, we began celebrations with Quranic recitation in honour of his Excellency Dar and family to pray for his wellbeing. He has long been known as a staunch believer of the Islamic faith and an advocate for women and girls empowerment. All his interventions and support is done out of goodwill and for Allah’s sake. Hence, my pride in partnering with someone like him.

Present at the event was the Refela Cordinators from various Regions, member of Parliament, Hon. Amie Colley, Women gardeners, and elders of the village among others. The community welcome the project with joy and promised to ensure its longevity by taking ownership of it. While we acknowledge and continue our advocacy on the importance of water, which remains one of Refela’s key priorities and embedded within the SDG 6. I wish to sincerely thank our partner, my brother and friend His Excellency Mohammad Ishaq Dar and his family, and pray that Allah rewards him abundantly. My special thanks also goes to all those who attended this beautiful event especially the women and elders of the village and the cultural groups.

I wish to once more reiterate REFELA and its partners commitment to ensure that women gardeners across the country have access to water by proving them with the required facilities such as boreholes in their gardens through our (Water for Women) initiative. We understand the importance of water especially how it can empower women to enable them gain freedom and have a voice in their communities. On behalf of the REFELA Executive I sincerely thank all volunteers of this program – we are grateful. Meanwhile, i am pleased to announe that in the next three weeks, we will be in the village of Sohm, Janack and Jarra Toyantaba, respectively, to inaugurate similar boreholes. We ask for your continuous prayers.
